Insulin Causes Heart Disease, What is Insulin Resistance?

What is Insulin Resistance? Why should you be more concerned about Insulin Resistance than Cholesterol? These are both questions I answer in this video. I provide evidence to why Insulin resistance is directly related to Heart Disease for you to better understand why Insulin Causes Heart Disease and not so much Cholesterol.

Insulin Resistance is most commonly related to Metabolic Syndrome. To learn more about Metabolic Syndrome watch this:

The most common questions I get …

1) “Doc, what BLOOD METER do you recommend?”

ANSWER: FORACARE:

For years my diabetics told me this system was great. I tried several others before I bought this one. I can’t count the number of times I have tested my blood only to get an ERROR message from the strip. Grrr. I hate that. FORACARE gets my vote because it is accurate and takes only ONE test strip to get the results. YES!!

2) “Doc, which Ketones-In-A-Can (aka exogenous ketones, BHB) do you recommend?”
EXOGENOUS KETONES BHB: Dr Boz BHB:

I don’t recommend these in everyone. I have times this is a great solution for my patients that are very overweight and trying to get used to burning ketones for fuel. All keto supplements should have magnesium in them. This one does.
I own the Dr Boz brand and the Dr Boz supplements.

3) “Doc, what can I have while fasting?”

Salt and water is the best.
The next best is a fasting tea. My favorite Pique Teas (also recommended by Jason Fung, MD):
Black coffee is okay during a fast.
Bone broth is alright.

  1. Last July I took a calcium scoring test without a doctor's prescription because I felt I needed to know for sure what my situation really was with respect to atherosclerosis. My current general care doctor was unwilling to prescribe one so I went out of town to a facility that allows the test without a prescription. I am 66 and male. The heart scan came back with a total score of 233. The LAD artery had a score of of 201. The left circumflex artery had a score of 32. All the other coronary arteries came back with a score of ZERO. I have heard of other people with lower total scores having far more coronary arteries affected. What should I make of the results I have?

  3. Dr Boz, got the Fora meter! My first check was this morning. Fasting blood glucose was 77, ketones were .2. I have been on Keto/carnivore diet with IF for over 8 months! No change in weight. What is wrong with me?

  4. Fantastic video! I always love your YouTube content. Here's my question: As a type-1 diabetic, is there some way I can calculate my "insulin level" by the amount of insulin that I'm taking? (assuming my body isn't making any insulin)… I would love to see a video on the Dr. Boz ratio for type-1 diabetics. Thanks so much 🙂

  5. This is like the GKI index? Or same thing only not using mmol for glucose? Seems to me it's the same ratio, using different numbers, so can I use my GKI to calculate (estimate) insulin levels? That would be valuable….I got my meter set up for mmols. I wish I could do longer fasts…. I'm just getting too skinny now, lol. 16-20 hours is about as long as I dare go. Anymore, and I'll just disappear, lol

  6. Kind of off topic, please help Dr Boz. My husband and I have been on keto about a month now, we are 40-55 in age, we live in FL (sea level) and go to Breckenridge Co annually (10,000 ft at base) altitude. Even on a carb full diet I have had issues with a little altitude sickness. This coming February will the first year we are going this high while on keto. Is it safe ?? Will being in ketosis cause more or less risk for altitude sickness ?? Should we be taking that week off keto ?? I can’t seem to find credible info on large temporary altitude changes. Thank you so much in advance.

  7. Three weeks on keto, I've been able to fast now first time for 48hrs. Boz ratios below 20 during fast. I feel great. I'm convinced insulin is the enemy. I'm a science guy, so when I no longer had chronic pain, I had to monitor ketones.

  8. Insulin, glucose, cholesterol are inherent. Saying insulin causes heart disease is like saying protein causes heart disease.

Have you listened to Dr. Thomas O'Bryan? Gluten sensitivity. Dairy Sensitivity.

Rethink the historical data linking heart disease to carbohydrates and sugar. Think of in terms of pasteurized and homogenized milk. Think of it in terms of gluten and wheat.

Sugar and fructose have always been around.

Dairy is associated with, study proven, with type 1 diabetes, schizophrenia, and heart disease.

Gluten, well, what isn't caused by gluten sensitivity.

  9. HELP! I've been on the Keto diet for a week. My inflammation is down, but I am SO FREAKING TIRED and WEAK! This fatigue makes me crave carbs really bad in the afternoon and evening. I've been eating clean, tracking macros, taking potassium and magnesium supplements, and using a little pink salt and MCT oil. I need help. Or will this work itself out with time? I'm growing skeptical, but I really want to lose weight and feel better so I can be active again. Right now, I'm the opposite of active. I get exhausted from a 30-minute walk!

  10. I hope anyone can read this. I put this post under another video about brain and keto but it is old and nobody would read it. I am in ketosis for a few month. After three month I got so stoned after eating meat. I was like on drugs. It really scares me. Since then I feel especially stoned when eating animal products meat and fat. I am not tired but chilled relaxed lost anxiety and depression. I take pills for mental health for years. I reduced them. I feel more protected than before. But still scared about what happening with me. I started to eat more carbs when feeling too stoned. Then it is not that strong. Someone any experience? As far as I know my doctor was always talking about pills not bridging the brain gap. Should I be scared?

  11. Thank you for all your information. I am confused however on why some of your videos come on as you are in mid conversation and end when you are still talking. 🤔

  12. I'm 57 y.o. male. My doc for years talked about cholesterol/statins. I hated statins, never stayed on them. Doc said nothing about sugar, just cholesterol. I avoided cholesterol. Last year, had MI at 56, 2 stents. The docs afterward said NOTHING about sugar, just statins. In fact, they recommend the low fat diet, which I"d been pursuing for 20+ years. So for six months I floundered, was putting on weight (I"d never been fat). The low fat diet should be called the HIGH SUGAR diet, because it is high carb and carbs break straight down into glucose. Anyhoo, a friend mentioned keto, and on March 7 2019 I went all in keto. Down from 225 to 182 lbs, nearing target of 170-175. A1c and trigs/HDL and blood glucose way down. I like keto because of this good health, but also because it MAKES SENSE – it is consuming what (fish/animals, a few veggies. almost no sugars) and how (intermittently) our bodies were over the millenia evolved to eat. We aren't evolved to graze on grains, to slurp fructose, to consume oxidized seed oils.

I found keto more than a bit late – my arteries are already a mess. Get off the carbs/sugars. Bring the trash bin into the kitchen and fill it with every last bit of all that high carb crap. Then head to the grocery. Start over on keto. Don't wait for your doc to see the light.

  13. I am expecting your book to be delivered this morning in my mail! I can't wait to read it. Thank you for all your information and how clear your instructions are. Enjoy your vacation!

  14. I've just learned that I've got advanced congestive heart failure with enlarged heart, chronic AF, and damaged valve ..
Question : Can I fast and get into autophagy while taking 'the usual' medications ?
Qestion 2 : Do you Skype consult … I'm in Australia – Brisbane Queensland ?

  15. Doc, you are a strong proponent of ketogenic diet. Please advise what a person with apoe4 gene should do ,who is restricted from taking large amount of saturated fats-that raises total cholesterol and LDL.

  16. I try to tell my fishing buddy that he is Type 2 or just about because of his gut (Big Beer Belly)
He tells me (45lbs Lighter) that I still have Belly (Got a String that shows it is 9 and 1/2" smaller and I am wearing 36" Jeans that started out at 42" 8 months ago) … Biggest difference is I can Pinch an Inch or 2 Inches as Flab… He cannot because he is so Extended that it is tight, I try to explain that I have lost Visceral Fat and the External Fat will follow and if I fast the Skin excess will also recede…
He has a DR that has him on all kinds of Drugs so that he thinks his BP, His Glucose and his (stupid) Cholesterol numbers are better than mine and he eats SAD.
He keeps getting Bigger and tells me that he won't give up Bread, Potatoes, Beer or Dessert for a Bogus Internet Diet. (He did give up all Veg Oils (except Peanut) and cut back on desserts) so I did make a dent.
I haven't made enough progress to show him the way (I am 64, he is 66 and he says he is going to ENJOY and not Worry)

  17. Dr. Boz…dropping knowledge from Hawaii? 😃 😄 😅 😆 An excellent and concise video on the topic. I'm long convinced on a high fat diet but it's not easy convincing friends, even those that are really hungry for answers. I'll be sure and share this with a few people.

  18. When I went on keto, my blood pressure went dangerously high and I went from one pill to five to just keep my BP in check. Turns out I may have a Carnitine deficiency. Could you cover the types of people who don't fit the awesomeness that is the keto diet? Is there any way to adapt it to someone like me?

  19. I'm sure you say it somewhere in the book (and yes I bought it and read it), but how long do you need to maintain the Dr. Boz ratio of 40 to guarantee the minimum autophagy.

  20. Wait… does insulin "cause" heart disease, or is high insulin just a marker for inflammation? I'm always skeptical of medical A causes B claims when really all you have is a hypothesis due to the correlation.
